Following a 'white gloves' auction in London on March 2, Phillips held its New Now sale in New York on March 8, featuring a large catalog of very young artists, some making their secondary market debut. The sale achieved a total of $8,408,153, with 221 of 263 lots sold. Avery Semjen, head of the auction, stated, 'The results of the New Now auction confirm the relentless strength of the mid-market.' Top lots included Alex Katz's 'Weeping Cherry 2' (2005) at $381,000, John Chamberlain's 'Anteambulo Quincunx' (1992) at $317,500, and Joe Bradley's 'Untitled' (2017) at $279,400. Emma Webster's 'Ophelia' (2020) sold for $215,900 against a low estimate of $50,000, matching Derrick Adams' 'Style Variation 4' (2018) at the same price. Cristina BanBan's 'Extra Cheese Before a Long Night Out' (2018) fetched $165,100, below its $180,000 low estimate, contrasting with her London success. Jason Boyd Kinsella's 'Nick' (2020) soared eight times above its low estimate, selling for nearly $180,000. Daisy Dodd-Noble's 'Three Trees on an Island' (2020) set a new auction record at $69,850 from a $5,000 low estimate. Other records were achieved by Tammy Nguyen and Susan Chen, confirming strong secondary market appetite for younger artists.
