Phillip Lai's RAIN / RUIN exhibition at Spike Island explores material transformations
Phillip Lai's exhibition RAIN / RUIN at Spike Island in Bristol presents sculptural works that challenge distinctions between everyday objects and art. The show features numerous untitled pieces from 2026 and earlier, including folded plastic rubble bags weighted with metal slabs containing embedded aluminum dishes. Concrete troughs filled with black wax display speaker-like cavities, while metal trays hold deep red liquid submerging black cast-resin fragments. A wall-mounted LCD panel shows video of an inflating black polythene bladder, and small screens on a steel plinth depict drifting smoke in monochromatic indoor spaces. A woven cane mat contains a hollow aluminum ring surrounded by burnt wheat grains. Two anomalous works disrupt the exhibition's contemplative atmosphere: a large metal cage mounted high on the wall emits harsh electronic noise through a speaker, and a wall niche displays resin and metal replicas of dinnerware behind an acrylic window. The exhibition continues through 10 May 2026, with gallery notes highlighting how Lai's objects resist easy recognition while exploring material states and containment. All works except two are untitled, deliberately avoiding linguistic suggestion.
