Phillip Allen's First Italian Solo Show at Luca Tommasi

British painter Phillip Allen, born in 1967, presents his first solo exhibition in Italy at Galleria Luca Tommasi in Milan, titled 'Deepdrippings.' The show explores the limits of two-dimensionality through oil painting, dissolving distinctions between canvas and frame, figure and ground, and center and margin. Allen's works feature a paroxysmal all-over composition of lumps, excrescences, artifices, and expressionist gestures, with paint layered to solidify and emit the smell of freshly applied, curdled, saturated color. The visual and intellectual play evokes the painter's action while the chromatic impasto generates screen-saver-like effects. Allen cites Marshall McLuhan's concept of 'acoustic space' as a key influence, with his painting acting on all senses through the 'ambient noise' of signs that explode at the edge of objectivity.
