Philippe Starck on dreams as creative engine at Milan Design Week 2026

During Milan Design Week 2026, Philippe Starck joined designboom's ROOM FOR DREAMS for a conversation with editor-in-chief Sofia Lekka Angelopoulou. The French designer described his dream state as an active workspace where subconscious invention occurs, calling it 'more interesting than my life.' Starck explained that he tests his nocturnal intuitions analytically at his desk, finding they consistently hold true. He contrasted the honesty of the dreaming mind with the performative nature of consciousness. The talk, titled 'Utopia as Method: When the Conscious Mind Dares to Dream,' also addressed Starck's critique of contemporary society's loss of utopian thinking, replaced by consumerism. He argued that utopian projects fail not because of flawed ideas but poor execution, and stressed the necessity of 'permanent revolution' for any visionary project to survive. Starck, known for the Juicy Salif lemon squeezer (Alessi, 1990) and the Louis Ghost Chair (Kartell), has applied his dream-driven process to projects ranging from the AXIOM Space Station crew quarters (2018) to the A.I. Chair for Kartell (2019) and architectural works like Villa M in Paris and Maison Heler in Metz.
