Philippe Parreno and Sound Art at Portikus and Schirn Kunsthalle

exhibition · 2026-04-23

At Frankfurt's Portikus, Daniel Birnbaum took over from Kasper König, unveiling Philippe Parreno's 'El sueño de una cosa'. This installation reinterpreted a 1951 monochrome sequence by Robert Rauschenberg, drawing inspiration from John Cage's 4'33". The space was darkened while a one-minute film filmed in the North Pole played, accompanied by Edgar Varèse's 'Désert'. It examined contradictions such as film versus stillness and the white cube versus the black box. A catalog featured selections from 'Speech Bubbles' (Les Presses du réel, 2001). Meanwhile, at Schirn Kunsthalle, new director Max Hollein and curator Jesper N. Jørgensen launched 'Fréquences espaces audiovisuels', showcasing 15 artists. The catalog (Cantz Verlag) included various articles and a CD, with Gislind Nabakowski discussing contemporary artists as multifunctional figures.
