Philip Guston retrospective opens at Gallerie dell'Accademia during Venice Biennale
The Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice will host the first-ever exhibition dedicated to Philip Guston in the city, opening May 10, 2017, during the preview of the 57th Venice Biennale. Curated by Kosme de Barañano, the show titled "Philip Guston and the Poets" explores the artist's relationship with literary sources, featuring 50 paintings and 25 drawings from 1930 to 1980. The exhibition is organized by the Gallerie dell'Accademia under director Paola Marini in collaboration with the Estate of Philip Guston. Guston, born in 1913 and died in 1980, was a major American painter. The show highlights his fascination with Venice, as evidenced by a 1975 letter to poet Bill Berkson expressing his passion for Tiepolo, Tintoretto, Pontormo, and Parmigianino. His daughter Musa Mayer, president of the Philip Guston Foundation, recalled visiting the Accademia with her father in 1960 during his exhibition at the US Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. The exhibition runs until September 3, 2017.
