Philadelphia's Magic Gardens: A Mosaic Wonder Saved by Community

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-31

Philadelphia's Magic Gardens, founded by artist Isaiah Zagar, is a vibrant mosaic art installation that draws approximately 150,000 visitors each year. Zagar initiated this creative endeavor in 1986 at 1003 Kater Street, gradually revitalizing derelict areas. By 1995, his project expanded to the site at 1020-22 South Street. In 2004, community efforts preserved the site when it was threatened by a sale. The museum officially opened in May 2008. Recently, the Zagars donated their studio, allowing for limited tours to commence in August 2024. The Gardens also feature workshops and cultural events, celebrating both community and artistic heritage.
