Phil Cave on Art Education: Community Engagement Beyond Museums

In an interview with Artribune, Phil Cave, an expert in art education, discusses the role of contemporary art in engaging diverse audiences, particularly the elderly and youth. He highlights projects like Magic Me and Duckie in London, which create artistic experiences for older people, such as cocktail bars in care homes and the 'Posh Club' cabaret. For youth, Cave cites the 18-month 'MoreColour to the Grey' project, where students from Northumberland College commissioned works from professional artists including Amy Lord, focusing on youth creativity and social change. Cave argues that art education should not be an isolated department but integrated across museums, supporting local communities rather than just marketing. He emphasizes the importance of artists working with communities outside traditional museum settings, especially in England's policy to strengthen art scenes beyond London. Cave praises Nottingham Contemporary for partnering with 22 of the city's poorest schools, using the gallery as a safe space for students to discuss issues, boosting their confidence and pride. The gallery now influences local planning for health, housing, and jobs. Cave was speaking ahead of the 'Dialoghi d'Arte' festival in Noli, Italy (June 8-10).
