Phaos Edizioni: Sicilian Independent Publisher Blends Craft and Territory

Founded in 2020 by graphic designer Giuseppe Rosalia and photographer Massimo Siragusa, Phaos Edizioni is an independent publishing house based in Sicily, dedicated to photography and art books. The name Phaos, from the Greek for 'light,' reflects the founders' aim to reveal hidden truths through their publications. The press emphasizes artisanal craftsmanship: handmade bindings, recycled paper, and carefully designed covers that treat each book as a precious typographic artifact. Phaos is deeply rooted in Sicilian territory, drawing creative energy from the island's complex identity—its contradictions, nostalgia, pride, and harshness. The publisher focuses on emerging authors and lesser-known talents, though it plans to work with established names in the future. Each volume centers on a place, using photography to explore the relationship between landscape, society, and identity. Financially, Phaos operates on low print runs and aims for break-even; both founders maintain separate careers (Siragusa as a photographer, Rosalia in advertising) to avoid burdening the press. Their latest book, Haiiro by Maurizio Cianciarelli, nearly sold out before its official launch. Phaos participated in the ninth edition of Sprint, the independent publishing fair in Milan's Porta Venezia, which drew a large young audience.
