Phaidon's Vitamin V Surveys Contemporary Video Art

Phaidon has published 'Vitamin V: Video and the Moving Image in Contemporary Art', a survey of over 100 contemporary moving-image artists. The book features an introduction by academic Erika Balsom, who condenses the history of moving image into eight pages. The remaining 265 pages present artists alphabetically, including John Akomfrah, William Kentridge, Lynn Hershman Leeson, and 2025 LG Guggenheim Award recipient Ayoung Kim. Entries were nominated by high-profile curators and directors such as MoMA's Stuart Comer and Rockbund's X Zhu-Nowell. Each spread includes an artist statement, artwork descriptions, and stills. The book covers diverse approaches: high-res, low-res, found-footage, staged, AI-generated images, speculative futures, and critical investigations of the past. It also features participants from the 2024 Venice Biennale: Gabrielle Goliath, Bouchra Khalili, Zineb Sedira, and Wael Shawky. The hardcover costs £49.95.
