Petra Collins Releases 'Star' Photo Book as Rehearsal for Feature Film Debut

Petra Collins has released 'Star', her seventh book and third with Rizzoli, which centers on a fictional pop girl group and explores the dark side of fandom. The Canadian-Hungarian photographer, known for shaping the aesthetics of modern girlhood and working with stars like Rosalía, Zendaya, Olivia Rodrigo, and Selena Gomez, describes the book as a rehearsal for her first feature film. Collins created an original score with composer Jake Nadrich to accompany the pages. The narrative, influenced by Hiromix, The Virgin Suicides, Larry Clark, and Kill Bill, follows a story involving a stalker, a mental institution, and roadside violence. Collins previously worked on HBO's 'Euphoria' for five months before being dismissed just before filming, though her visual style had already permeated fashion, music, and pop culture. She cites the early 2000s exploitation of young female stars as a key inspiration, and notes that today's parasocial relationships between fans and stars are intensified by social media and AI misinformation.
