Peter Schuyff's 33-Meter Mural Inspired by Morandi Rises in Bologna's Bolognina District

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

A 33-meter-high building in Via Passarotti 26, Bologna, now features a large contemporary painting by Dutch artist Peter Schuyff (born 1958), commissioned by Scaramouche gallery (Milan/New York) and financed by Vittorio srl costruzioni. The mural, described as one of the largest contemporary paintings in Italy, is an ecological-themed composition that pays homage to Giorgio Morandi, studying his colors, still lifes, landscapes, and black etchings. The project is a collaboration with LOBO Ingegneria e Architettura and assistants Tristan Vancini and Giorgio Bartocci. Daniele Ugolini, Scaramouche's owner, has admired Schuyff for thirty years. The work is part of the ongoing redevelopment of the Bolognina area, a former manufacturing and working-class district now known for its multicultural character and home to the new municipal palace designed by Mario Cucinella, the Museo della Memoria di Ustica, and Teatro Testoni. The unveiling is planned for May 2021, pending pandemic conditions. A second facade project with Vittorio srl is scheduled for 2023, featuring a yet-unnamed visual artist (not a pure wall painter).
