Peter N. Miller named new president of American Academy in Rome

Peter N. Miller, a historian and former dean of the Bard Graduate Center, has been appointed president of the American Academy in Rome (AAR). In an interview, Miller outlined his vision for the institution, emphasizing the need to strengthen connections with Rome and Italy, and to reassert AAR's identity as the national academy of the United States. He plans to foster interdisciplinary programming, including a new annual cosmology lecture on April 15, 2024, commemorating Galileo's 1611 telescope demonstration on the Janiculum Hill. Miller also highlighted the importance of architecture and music programs, and aims to make the exhibition space a hub for art discourse. He stressed that AAR, founded by two Acts of Congress but privately funded, should be seen as an Italian institution and the US national academy.
