Peter Handke's Drawings Published by Jaca Book
A new volume titled "Peter Handke. Disegni" (Jaca Book, 2020) reveals the Nobel laureate's lesser-known practice as a draftsman. The book presents drawings and annotated pages created between 2007 and 2017, previously exhibited at Galerie Klaus Gerrit in Berlin and published in 2019 by Schirmer and Mosel. Handke's works combine writing and imagery, often incorporating elements from nature, animals, plants, fruits, religious figures, and locations such as Picardy, Paris, Serbia, and Corsica. The Italian edition includes an introductory note by philosopher Giorgio Agamben, who draws parallels between Handke's drawings and the Japanese surimono tradition, where poetry and painting coexist on the same sheet. Agamben describes Handke's approach as focusing on the genesis of form rather than form itself, creating a dramatic tension within small-scale works. The book is priced at €50 and spans 144 pages.
