Peter Greenaway creates multimedia installation for Lorenzo Lotto in Recanati

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Peter Greenaway, the visionary British filmmaker known for his painterly cinematic style, returns to Italy with a permanent multimedia installation inspired by Lorenzo Lotto's 'Annunciation,' housed at the Museo Civico di Villa Colloredo Mels in Recanati. Two installations will be inaugurated in 2018: one in the painting's room and another in the adjacent space. The project is part of Infinito Recanati, a nine-year cultural promotion plan with a €4 million budget, aiming to boost tourism by valorizing local artistic and architectural heritage. The initiative includes a unified ticket for all museums in the area: Villa Colloredo Mels, Museo Beniamino Gigli, Museo Diocesano, Torre Civica, and Chiesa di San Vito. Greenaway has a long history with Italy, having previously created immersive installations for Leonardo da Vinci's 'Last Supper' in Milan and New York, and Veronese's 'Wedding at Cana' in Venice. In 2015, his 'Tribute to Italy' was presented at the Italian Pavilion curated by Vincenzo Trione, marking the first time foreign artists were invited. The Recanati project aims to replicate the massive public success of those earlier works.
