Peter Gabriel's new album 'i/o' pairs each song with a unique artwork
Peter Gabriel is releasing his first studio album in over 20 years, titled 'i/o', with each track accompanied by a site-specific artwork. The first single, 'Panopticom', dropped on January 6, 2023, coinciding with the first full moon of the year. Gabriel plans to release new songs on each full moon throughout 2023, with no fixed album release date. The single's cover art is 'Red Gravity' by British artist David Spriggs, known for large-scale 3D installations using layered transparent images, a technique he pioneered in 1999. Gabriel explained that the theme of surveillance connected him to Spriggs's work. The song 'Panopticom' is inspired by the work of Forensic Architecture, Bellingcat, and Witness, an organization Gabriel co-founded in 1992. These groups are developing a global data platform called Panopticom, described as a satellite globe allowing users to upload and monitor personal, social, economic, political, scientific, and environmental data. The track was recorded at Real World Studios in Bath and a London studio, featuring longtime collaborators Brian Eno, Tony Levin, Manu Katché, and David Rhodes. Gabriel also announced a UK and European tour, his first in ten years since the 2014 Back To Front Tour, with two Italian dates: May 20 at Arena di Verona and May 21 at Mediolanum Forum in Milan.
