Peter Eisenman's Holocaust Memorial in Berlin Opens After Controversy

After 15 years of debate, two competitions, five years of construction, and numerous administrative and media back-and-forths, Peter Eisenman's Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin was inaugurated in May 2005. The memorial consists of 2,711 concrete stelae bordering the Tiergarten between the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz. The project faced persistent controversies from its conception through completion.
