Peter Copping on Lanvin's 1920s Legacy and Mentoring SCAD Students

Lanvin artistic director Peter Copping discusses the enduring influence of the 1920s on his work, the house's archives, and his mentorship of SCAD students. Copping, who joined Lanvin in September 2024, emphasizes the liberating nature of 1920s fashion as the root of modern style. He draws inspiration from Jeanne Lanvin's personal possessions, including her bathroom designed by Armand Albert Rateau, and visited the Museum of Decorative Arts to study her bedroom. Copping's debut collection featured Deco-like zigzag and triangular lace designs. He notes that Lanvin was a pioneer: a milliner who launched children's wear, menswear (celebrating 100 years in 2026), sports line, home goods, and perfumes, making her the first lifestyle brand. Copping also worked with six SCAD graduates who designed Lanvin-inspired eveningwear for imagined red-carpet events, choosing to focus on Jeanne Lanvin's era. The students created looks for celebrities including Zendaya, Tang Wei, and Elle Fanning. Copping plans to send the Zendaya dress to stylist Law Roach. He praises Jeanne Lanvin's social conscience, including a staff canteen and holiday retreat for workers.
