Peter Aufreiter leaves Galleria Nazionale delle Marche after four years

Peter Aufreiter has stepped down as director of the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino after four years. During his tenure, he increased visitor numbers to over 200,000 in 2018, a record year despite the 2016 earthquake. He reorganized the museum's layout, introduced digital and multimedia supports, and created Spazio K for emerging artists from the Marche region. Aufreiter also integrated contemporary art into the historic Palazzo Ducale, which he described as a Renaissance laboratory for contemporary art. He cited bureaucracy and staff shortages as obstacles to some projects. He advised his successor to rely on the dedicated staff and maintain dialogue with the city and territory.
