Pesaro Film Festival 2016: Super 8 Focus on Baresi and Porter
The 52nd edition of the Pesaro International Festival of New Cinema introduces a new section, Satellite – Visions for Future Cinema, dedicated to extra-industrial works. The festival also includes a program of Italian animated shorts, a Critofilm section, a retrospective of Algerian director Tariq Teguia, the presentation of Queen Kong, a roundtable on feminist pornography in collaboration with 8 e ½ magazine, and Lezioni di storia – Videoteppismi. A key focus is Super 8, curated by Karianne Fiorini and Gianmarco Torri, featuring filmmakers Giuseppe Baresi and John Porter. For the second year, the festival highlights underground cinema using the obsolete Super 8 format, emphasizing its materiality, performative projection, and low-budget, artisanal approach. Baresi and Porter will project their original Super 8 films, a rare choice. Porter performs live with his films, while Baresi presents a work-in-progress from his private archive, unseen for three decades. The festival also explores the international Super 8 scene, referencing collectives like L’abominable in Paris, festivals such as Analogica and Unza! in Milan, and the ReMi meeting in Nantes. Fiorini discusses her archival work on Helga Fanderl’s 900 Super 8 films and ongoing projects with Baresi and Pieters.
