Perugino's Masterpieces Now Available Online in High Definition
Following a major retrospective on Perugino (Città della Pieve, 1446 – Fontignano, 1523) held last March at the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria in Perugia on the 500th anniversary of his death, a new initiative makes his works accessible online in ultra-high resolution. The project is a collaboration between Haltadefinizione, a Modena-based company that in 2006 published the world's first 8.6-gigapixel photo of an artwork, and the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, which holds the largest collection of Perugino's works. Using gigapixel technology, masterpieces such as "Lo Sposalizio della Vergine" (1501-1504), "L'Adorazione dei Magi" (1470-1473), and "Cristo deposto" (1507) can now be viewed in extraordinary detail. Marco Pierini, director of the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, described the tool as "an enhancement of sight, something unimaginable, like turning all our works into Flemish paintings, where visual power is cubed." He emphasized that the digitization project makes works accessible remotely and serves as a tool for conservation and research. For instance, restorers analyzing "L'Adorazione dei Magi" discovered the inscription "io" on the collar of a young figure on the left, identified as a self-portrait of the artist. The high-definition images are available on Haltadefinizione's platform.
