Perrotin Opens Massive Lower East Side Gallery
Emmanuel Perrotin has opened a new flagship gallery in New York's Lower East Side at 130 Orchard Street, leaving the Upper East Side location he occupied since 2013. The building spans over 2,300 square meters across multiple floors, making it his largest space to date. Acquired for $28 million, the property was redeveloped by PRO-Peterson Rich Office. Currently, only the ground floor is accessible, featuring a hall, entrance, and a grand exhibition space hosting a show by 35-year-old Colombian artist Iván Argote. By November 2017, the entire building is expected to open, with three floors of exhibition galleries, a skylight for natural light, a ground-floor bookshop, artist residencies and guest apartments on upper floors, and a panoramic terrace for occasional outdoor sculptures. Perrotin, who began his operations in Paris in 1989 at age 20, now has spaces in Paris, Asia, and New York. The move signals a shift away from the traditional gallery district model, as the city's art scene expands into multiple neighborhoods.
