Perico Pastor on the Dialogue Between Text and Image

artist · 2026-05-27

Catalan artist Perico Pastor (born 1953 in La Seu d'Urgell) discusses his lifelong practice of moving between image and word. Known for his vibrant pictorial work on paper, Pastor has illustrated for The New York Times, Harper's, The Village Voice, and Vogue, and created covers for Quaderns Crema and Acantilado. He authored the monumental illustrated Bible for Enciclopèdia Catalana, completed in six months. His work has been exhibited at Morimura Museum (Osaka), Commenoz Gallery (Miami), and Galería Elvira González (Madrid). From 1976 to 1989, he lived in New York, where he collaborated with writer Quim Monzó and worked with editor Jaume Vallcorba of Quaderns Crema. Pastor's book 'El matrimoni. Un catàleg…' (Quaderns Crema), first shown at his 1985 exhibition at Galería René Metras in Barcelona, is now out of print. He illustrated Eduardo Mendoza's serialized novel 'Sin noticias de Gurb' for El País in 1990, using only feet to depict characters. Pastor prefers Japanese washi paper for its immediacy. He coordinates 'El Mar de l’Art' at Hospital del Mar in Barcelona, a project started for the 1992 Olympics. He aspires to illustrate Casanova's memoirs.
