Pergamon Museum in Berlin to Partially Reopen in 2027 After Decade-Long Renovation

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-11

The Pergamon Museum, situated on Berlin's Museum Island, has been closed since October 2023. It is set to partially reopen in June 2027, allowing access to the north wing and central section. A complete reopening is anticipated by 2037, although some estimates push this to 2043. Renovation efforts, which began in 2012, have encountered delays and exceeded budgets, totaling €1.5 billion. This reopening coincides with the 200th anniversary of Museum Island. Visitors will once again be able to see the Pergamon Altar, although it will be unavailable for five months in 2034. The Museum of Islamic Art will showcase a revamped exhibition, and the Museum of the Ancient Near East will feature Babylonian artifacts. The Ishtar Gate and other exhibits will remain closed until the 2030s. The project, conceived by Oswald Mathias Ungers, will introduce a fourth wing and an underground walkway.
