cultural-heritage · 2026-04-20

Starting in October, the Pergamon Museum in Berlin will close its doors due to significant structural problems, such as moisture damage and outdated systems, according to Deutsche Welle. Constructed from 1910 to 1930 in a Stripe-Classicism architectural style, this museum is located on Berlin's Museum Island, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Among its notable exhibits are the Pergamon Altar, a Greek relic unearthed in 1886 in present-day Turkey, and the Ishtar Gate from Babylon, located in modern Iraq. The Pergamon Altar is expected to reopen in 2027, while the entire museum will undergo extensive renovations and remain closed until 2037.
