Perfect Blue Returns to Italian Cinemas in 4K Restoration for Three Days

other · 2026-04-26

Nexo Digital, following the success of special screenings of Akira in 2023, is bringing another Japanese animation masterpiece to Italian theaters: Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue. The film, Kon's directorial debut, will be shown in a restored and remastered 4K version from April 22 to 24. Perfect Blue is a psycho-thriller about Mima Kirigoe, a popstar who transitions to acting, leading to a spiral of instability and murder. Based on a novel by Yoshikazu Takeuchi, the film premiered in 1997 and is noted for its prescient themes of internet culture, public acceptance, and media intrusion. Kon, born in Sapporo in 1963 and died in Tokyo in 2010, was influenced by Katsuhiro Otomo and later directed Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent, and Paprika. Perfect Blue has inspired directors like Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan) and Christopher Nolan. The screening is part of the Anime al cinema season, a collaboration between Nexo Digital and Yamato Video, which also includes Captain Harlock: Arcadia of My Youth (May 20-22) and Lupin III: The Stone of Wisdom (June 24-26).
