Penguins prefer Caravaggio over Monet at Kansas City museum

other · 2026-04-27

During the Coronavirus lockdown, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City organized a unique tour for three Humboldt penguins from the local zoo. The penguins—Bubbles (5), Maggie (7), and Berkley (8)—were allowed to roam the galleries under supervision to ensure safety for both animals and artworks. Museum director Julián Zugazagoitia told TIME he expected the penguins to be drawn to Monet's water and nature scenes, but they lingered longer in front of Caravaggio's paintings. "We have no idea what they feel, what goes through their minds," Zugazagoitia commented, "but they stop, look, and wonder." The museum, founded in the early 20th century through donations from William Rockhill Nelson and Mary McAfee Atkins, houses a vast collection including works by Caravaggio, Titian, Rubens, Rembrandt, Monet, and Van Gogh.
