other · 2026-04-19

Tan Chor Whye, the celebrated "godfather of Penang murals," passed away on November 25 at the age of 67 from heart disease. His death marks a significant loss for the street art scene in George Town, which he helped transform into a vibrant hub. After retiring from interior design at 60, Tan founded Can Can Public Art and became the director of the George Town Festival. He began fostering artistic collaborations in 2010, famously bringing Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic to Penang, leading to memorable works like Little Children on a Bicycle (2012) and Rage Against the Machine (2016), the latter destroyed in 2018. In 2015, he worked with Russian artist Julia Volchkova, helping launch her career with Indian Boatman and Indonesian Boy. Most recently, he collaborated with MP Sim Tze Tzin for a mural project in Sungai Ara, unveiling pieces by his son, Anderson Tan I-Han, on January 6, 2025. Sim honored Tan on social media, recognizing his immense impact on making street art a global phenomenon in Penang. Born in 1958, Tan was instrumental in uniting artists, communities, and sponsors, leaving a lasting mark on Penang's cultural landscape.
