Peggy Guggenheim's 1948 Biennale Exhibition and CoBrA's Founding Celebrated
In 2018, the 70th anniversary of the 1948 Peggy Guggenheim collection exhibition at the XXIV Venice Biennale was commemorated. That exhibition, held in the Greek pavilion, was the first public display of a private modern art collection in Italy after two decades of fascist rule, and the first European presentation of Guggenheim's collection after her New York gallery Art of This Century closed. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice recreated the pavilion environment in a focused exhibition running until January 14, 2019. Also in 1948, the CoBrA group was founded by artists Asger Jorn, Corneille, Karel Appel, and Pierre Alechinsky, named after Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam. Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers held a major auction of CoBrA art on December 4-5, 2018. Additionally, the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was marked on December 10, 2018, with a photographic exhibition 'Human Rights: The History of the UN' at Casa di Vetro in Milan, curated by Alessandro Luigi Perna, featuring images from the United Nations Photo Library, running until June 22, 2019. A separate exhibition at Museo Civico di Bassano del Grappa celebrates Valentina, the character created by Guido Crepax in 1965, until April 15, 2019.
