Peggy Guggenheim Collection announces 2023 exhibitions: Bacci and Duchamp

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice has unveiled its 2023 exhibition program, featuring two major shows dedicated to Edmondo Bacci and Marcel Duchamp. From April 1 to September 18, 2023, the museum presents "Edmondo Bacci. L'energia della luce," curated by Chiara Bertola. This is the first retrospective on the Venetian Spatialist painter (1913–1978), featuring about 80 works including paintings and unpublished drawings from national and international museums and private collections. Bacci was one of the few Italian artists to achieve international success during his lifetime, alongside Tancredi Parmeggiani and Emilio Vedova, and had a dedicated room at the 29th Venice Biennale in 1958. The second exhibition, "Marcel Duchamp e la seduzione della copia," runs from October 14, 2023, to March 25, 2024, curated by Paul B. Franklin. It examines how Duchamp challenged the hierarchy between original and copy by replicating his work in various media and limited editions. The centerpiece is Duchamp's "Boîte-en-Valise" (1935–41), a portable museum containing 69 miniature replicas, which Peggy Guggenheim purchased from the artist in 1941. The show includes around thirty works from a private Venetian collection and other loans from Italian and American institutions.
