Peccioli's Resilient Community Model Showcased at Italy Pavilion of Venice Architecture Biennale

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The Italy Pavilion at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by Alessandro Melis of Heliopolis 21, presents "Comunità resilienti" (Resilient Communities), focusing on how small Italian towns overcome adversity. The biennale, titled "How will we live together?" and curated by Hashim Sarkis, was delayed due to the pandemic. Peccioli, a medieval village in Tuscany's Pisa province with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, serves as a prime example. Through the public-private entity Belvedere and its large landfill, Peccioli converts waste into energy, funding services and infrastructure that generate environmental care and well-being. The landfill has become an open-air museum, cultural center, and amphitheater hosting events by Gucci, Prada, Valentino, actors Pierfrancesco Favino and Luca Zingaretti, journalist Luca Sofri, and the Orchestra del Maggio Fiorentino. Art installations include works by David Tremlett (known to Tate Gallery and MoMA), Sergio Staino, and Naturaliter, creator of giant guardian figures emerging from waste. Peccioli also integrates technology with smart homes, business incubators, and AI-powered robots delivering groceries and running errands for the elderly. The village has been awarded the orange flag by the Touring Club Italiano and is part of the "Laboratorio Peccioli" initiative attracting international artists, curators, actors, intellectuals, journalists, musicians, researchers, and designers.
