Peccioli: A Tuscan Village Transformed into an Open-Air Museum
Peccioli, a small Tuscan town in the province of Pisa, winner of the 2024 edition of the Rai TV program 'Il Borgo dei Borghi', is celebrated in a new exhibition at the former Ex Automercato. The show, 'Peccioli: racconti di una stagione', features works by four artists—Karim El Maktafi, Camilla Ferrari, Sara Scanderebech, and Riccardo Svelto—who undertook residencies in summer 2023. Each artist documented different aspects of local life: El Maktafi photographed workers at the waste treatment plant, using black-and-white to humanize the subjects; Scanderebech explored macro views of the landfill, highlighting new life amid debris; Svelto captured summer river scenes, focusing on anonymous figures to evoke eternal adolescence; Ferrari shifted from documentary to a cosmic narrative, linking Peccioli to an astronomical observatory in Bibbiena and incorporating LED installations. The exhibition aims to foster deeper knowledge of the territory and create dialogue between artists and community. Peccioli has gained international recognition for its art and urban renewal project, functioning as an open-air museum.
