Pavillon des Jardins: New Pavilion in Palazzo Farnese Garden Uses Recycled Roman History
In Rome's Palazzo Farnese gardens, a new structure named Pavillon des Jardins has been constructed utilizing recycled materials that reflect the building's historical significance. The design, created by French firm Materra-Matang—established in 2022 by Ophélie Dozat and Lucien Dumas—integrates elements such as Michelangelo's travertine fragments, 16th-century terracotta tiles, and 18th-century granite cobblestones sourced from Palazzo Farnese, Villa Medici, and the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi. Emerging from an artist residency at Villa Medici during 2023-2024, this energy self-sufficient pavilion will function as a co-working space for staff and features reclaimed interior furnishings. The initiative received backing from the Sovrintendenza ai Beni Culturali di Roma and was overseen by archaeologists.
