Pavana: The Tuscan Village of Francesco Guccini Where Bolognese Is Spoken

Pavana, a small frazione of Sambuca Pistoiese in Tuscany, is a place of memory and frontier, where the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines meet. Its history dates to the Middle Ages, with the first documented mention in 998. During the early 13th-century conflict between Pistoia and Bologna, Pavana sometimes sided with Bologna, reflecting its borderland identity. This is still evident in its dialect, which has strong Emilian influences despite being in Tuscany. The Via Francesca della Sambuca, a branch of the Via Francigena, passed through, connecting Pistoia to Bologna. The church of Santa Maria and San Frediano, built in the second half of the 18th century, houses a 1656 painting by Pellegrino de’ Pellegrini da Fanano, originally from an earlier oratory. The village also features 19th-century Logge and a grand-ducal customs house from 1846. Pavana is intimately linked to singer-songwriter Francesco Guccini, who spent his childhood there and later immortalized it in songs like 'Radici' and 'Piccola città', as well as in his literary works, including the 1989 'Cròniche epafàniche' and the 'Dizionario del dialetto di Pàvana'. Guccini, born in Modena in 1940, returned to live in Pavana in his later years and died there on August 6, 2026, at age 86.
