Paulina Herrera Letelier's cement tapestry installed at Cagliari airport

Chilean architect and designer Paulina Herrera Letelier (b. 1978) has created a site-specific sculptural work titled 'InTransit' for the pedestrian walkway connecting the Elmas Airport terminal to the railway station in Cagliari, Sardinia. The 12-meter-long, 80-centimeter-high piece is made of concrete mixed with recycled materials, with painted interventions and glass inlays. It evokes a traditional Sardinian woven tapestry using the 'pibiones' technique, which produces a grape-like texture. The work also suggests a tapestry moved by the mistral wind that shapes the island's vegetation and rocks. The project was funded and realized by Frem Group, a steel company founded in 1984 by the Fadda brothers, including Emilio Fadda, an art enthusiast who commissions art interventions in Sardinia to enhance urban spaces and extend corporate culture. Recent projects by Herrera for Frem Group include a monument to the fallen in Samugheo and a tapestry about obsidian in Pau. Emilio Fadda envisions covering the entire pedestrian walkway with a series of urban interventions through residencies held at the company, where an apartment has been set up. The artistic direction for the unitary project has been offered to the writer, Roberta Vanali, and will consider sustainability, use of recycled materials, and the relationship between tradition and innovation, avoiding folkloric representation.
