Paula Cooper Gallery to debut never-before-seen Mark di Suvero kinetic sculpture

exhibition · 2026-05-02

From May 2nd to July 17th, Paula Cooper Gallery will showcase an exhibition featuring large-scale sculptures and drawings by Mark di Suvero. The highlight of the exhibition is Avanti! (circa late 1990s), which will be displayed for the first time. This kinetic sculpture includes a twenty-three-foot-long horizontal beam suspended within a vertical steel circle, with an intersecting beam supporting a small platform that rocks back and forth when a viewer shifts their weight. Created in the late 1990s, Avanti! incorporates earlier elements from di Suvero's work and was crafted in his outdoor studio in Long Island City. Additionally, the main gallery will feature Nelly (1986), a sculpture made of intersecting steel I-beams linked by a curved, hand-cut piece.
