Paul Thorel's 'Passaggio della Vittoria' acquired by Madre Museum, Naples

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Paul Thorel (London, 1956) has created 'Passaggio della Vittoria', a site-specific mosaic work recently acquired by the Madre museum in Naples. The piece, curated by Andrea Viliani with Silvia Salvati, is installed in the walkway between the museum's external courtyards. It continues Thorel's research on digital image processing and spatial awareness, adding a Mediterranean chromatic quality. The work also serves as a maquette for the museum's upward trajectory: Laura Valente, president of the Fondazione Donnaregina, reports that the foundation's collection has increased by over 70% in the last three years, and paying visitors have risen by more than 40%. Thorel chose the mosaic technique, referencing Pompeii's ancient roots, as a natural evolution of his earlier dialogue between past and present techniques, such as his 2015 'Tapestries' series. The work was produced in collaboration with Mutina for Art. Thorel's practice aims not to oppose technology but to integrate it with human use, disarming photographic objectivity to empower perception and intuition.
