Paul Smith and Gabriela Hearst launch painterly countryside-inspired collection

other · 2026-05-21

A limited-edition collection featuring 14 pieces that merge menswear and womenswear has been launched by British designer Paul Smith and Uruguayan designer Gabriela Hearst, now available on their online platforms. This collaboration is inspired by two photographs of the British countryside captured by Paul Smith's father, Harold B. Smith, who was part of the Beeston Camera Club in Nottinghamshire. Previously, Harold's amateur photography appeared in the 2000 book 'Father & Son' and was utilized in Paul Smith's A/W 2025 collection. The new collection showcases these images as prints on outerwear and tailoring, along with painterly motifs on knit sweaters and a 'mountain' shade for virgin wool trousers. Additionally, updated versions of Hearst's 'Nina' and 'Demi' bags are included. Hearst's careful material selection features virgin wool barré for tailoring, silk satin, and cashmere hand-knit by the non-profit cooperative Manos del Uruguay, which supports women artisans in rural areas. Both designers, lacking formal design education, share a commitment to experiential learning. The collection is presented through photographs by Cathy Kasterine and styled by Camilla Nickerson, merging natural landscapes with a 'raw New York sensibility', drawing inspiration from 1970s Patti Smith and Brooklyn musician Cameron Winter of the band Geese.
