Paul Sharits' Structural Films Released on DVD
A new DVD box set, "Paul Sharits, Mandala films, Re: voir (dvd)", compiles the structural films of American avant-garde filmmaker Paul Sharits. The collection includes works such as "Piece Mandala" (1966), "N:O:T:H:I:N:G" (1968), and "T,O,U,C,H,I,N,G" (1968). Sharits' cinema is non-verbal, communicating through the flicker of monochrome frames and exploring perception via retinal persistence. "Piece Mandala" rhythmically shows a couple in different lovemaking positions, denying movement. "N:O:T:H:I:N:G" features only a projector bulb and a chair, inspired by Vermeer's "Lady Standing at a Virginal". "T,O,U,C,H,I,N,G" alternates a blue-tinted eye operation scene with penetration, while the word "destroy" repeats audibly, generating other words. The films create intense sensations and a paradoxical sense of reality through pure nonsense. The set was released by Re: voir and reviewed by Louis-José Lestocart in artpress.
