Paul Corio's New York solo debut at 210 Gallery features optical abstraction with racing-inspired color grids

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Paul Corio's inaugural solo exhibition in New York, titled 'No Hassle at the Castle,' took place at 210 Gallery from January 23 to February 28. A graduate of both RISD and Hunter College, Corio's artistic approach blends humor with abstraction influenced by Josef Albers. The showcase included works such as Toga Tiger (2009), characterized by a grid of colored rectangles, and Mr. Hi-Hat (2009), which examines color intensity through overlapping disks. Additionally, nine small panel paintings from 2005 explore variations in color themes. Misterioso (2008) features spectral hues on a blue-green backdrop, while The Sons of Birdstone presents a grid of chevrons shifting from yellow to red. Sunset Park transitions a gray scale into a smoky haze, and MR PC #3 has a pixelated title reminiscent of scoreboards.
