Patrick Hamilton Rewrites Nazi Escape Myth in Ultramar Sur at Pastificio Cerere

Chilean artist Patrick Hamilton unveils his project Ultramar Sur for its European debut at Rome's Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, in partnership with IILA. This exhibition delves into the post-World War II flight of Nazi officials to South America and the legend surrounding Nazi gold. Originally from Belgium and raised in Chile, Hamilton, who currently resides in Madrid, initiated this project in 2006 after discovering Nazi gold concealed within Lanz tractor parts. The title alludes to the underwater escape of around fifty Nazi leaders to Argentina's Mar de la Plata. Through video, photography, sculpture, and mixed media, Hamilton investigates the interplay of history and myth, using gold leaf and engine grease as key symbols. He highlights the increasing visibility of Latin American art since the 1990s.
