Patrick Amadon's Hong Kong digital artwork removed after political content discovered

digital · 2026-04-20

A digital animation by Patrick Amadon, an artist from Los Angeles, was removed from a billboard in Hong Kong after its political implications were recognized. The piece, named 'No Rioters,' was showcased on the SOGO Causeway Bay department store for about a week. It displayed the rapidly flashing names of pro-democracy figures such as Joshua Wong and Benny Tai, which were only visible through photographs. Amadon intended the artwork to align with Art Basel Hong Kong, voicing his disappointment over the art community's neglect of political oppression in the city. Although there was no official request for its removal, SOGO asked for it to be taken down once they understood its political context. The artist was surprised it lasted as long as it did.
