Patricia Piccinini Retrospective at Arken Museum Explores Love and Species Boundaries

A retrospective of Australian artist Patricia Piccinini (born 1965), titled 'A World of Love', is on view at the Arken Museum of Modern Art in Ishøj, Denmark, through September 8. In a video interview for the Louisiana Museum's web TV, Piccinini discusses the ideas behind her sculptures, which depict fantastical human-animal hybrid creatures. She repeatedly challenges the notion of human superiority over other species, questioning the ethics of altering nature. 'Love is one of the things that can help us destroy these barriers,' she says. 'Our task is to take care of the life around us. Will we change nature for our purposes? Or will we change it for other reasons? And ultimately, what reason is valid enough to change it?' The exhibition presents a comprehensive survey of her work, known for evoking a world where species boundaries blur.
