Pat Steir Recreates 1987 Installation at New York Studio School with Old Master Drawings and Waterfall

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Pat Steir's exhibition, "Self-Portrait: Reprise 1987-2009," took place at the New York Studio School, located at 8 West 8 Street, NYC, from November 5 to December 19, 2009. This showcase recreated a previous installation from the New Museum dating back to 1987. With the help of students and volunteers, Steir adorned the gallery with blue stains and gold chalk grids, alongside large-scale drawings influenced by renowned masters such as Albrecht Dürer. The first room featured Dürer’s figures, while the second focused on body parts, culminating in a signature Steir waterfall on the last wall. Reflecting her belief in the interconnectedness of experiences, the installation was set to be erased on December 20, 2009.
