Pat Passlof Memorial and Exhibition Announced Following Artist's Death at 83
Pat Passlof, an artist who hailed from Brunswick, Georgia, passed away on Sunday at the age of 83 after a courageous fight against cancer. Her passing occurred just before the opening of a new exhibition featuring her artwork at the Elizabeth Harris Gallery, set to begin on Saturday, November 19, at 529 West 20th Street, and continuing until December 23. A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, November 18, at 11:30 AM at the College of Staten Island Library, where she taught for many years. Contributions in her honor may be made to the Library Fund for Art and Photography and the Tenenbaum Materials Scholarship Fund. Passlof was a student of Willem de Kooning at Black Mountain College and later became his private assistant in New York. Through de Kooning, she met her husband, Milton Resnick. While deeply committed to Resnick's artistic legacy, she was also a trailblazer in the feminist art movement, participating in the influential 1973 exhibition "Women Choosing Women" at the New York Cultural Center, organized by Lucy Lippard, alongside Sylvia Sleigh and Ce Roser. Her abstract works skillfully balance gesture and composition, employing grids to slow down movement while preserving expressive vitality. A funeral service will take place on Friday, November 18, at 10 AM at Boe Fook Funeral Home on Canal Street.
