Pascal Goblot defends his authorship of Duchamp's Grand Verre copy amid dispute

opinion-review · 2026-04-23

Pascal Goblot has issued a right of reply in Artpress, refuting claims by Bernard Moninot regarding the creation of a replica of Marcel Duchamp's 'The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even' (the Large Glass). The copy is currently exhibited at the Centre Pompidou-Metz in the exhibition 'Lacan, When Art Meets Psychoanalysis'. Goblot asserts he initiated and directed the project, which included a film and a performance titled 'To Be Broken', with the participation of six students from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (ENSBA) under the workshop 'Sur les traces de la Mariée'. He claims Moninot, who hosted the workshop in his drawing class, is now trying to claim undue credit. Goblot provides a detailed chronology from 2005 to 2014, stating he secured rights from Duchamp's heirs, including Jacqueline Matisse Monnier, and funding. He describes the technical process and notes that Moninot was aware of the performance aspect but later omitted it. A dispute arose over the workshop's attribution, with Moninot demanding co-director status. Goblot refused, leading to a rift. The cartel at the museum has since been corrected to include the students. Goblot offers to provide documentary evidence.
