Participatory Art Projects in Hungary Explore Social Engagement Through Public Commissions

publication · 2026-04-19

In Hungary, participatory art hasn't really taken off, even though interest spiked around 2000. The Ludwig Museum, along with the Ministry of Economy and Transport, hosted various contests for community projects in 2003, and the Hungarian Art Council continued this from 2008 to 2009. For example, Balázs Beöthy worked with homeless people at Moscow Square, while János Sugár collected personal stories for 4000 forints. During the Moszkva tér – Gravitation exhibition, Hints organized a communal meal that stood in stark contrast to a VIP buffet. Endre Koronczi's Csetteg? Project honored agricultural tools, showcased in Péter Lágler's 2004 film, Mechanical Folk Art. Moreover, László Gergely's Commuting Artillery addressed unemployment in Nagykáta, and Tehnica Schweiz put together a garage festival in Dunaújváros. In 2009, Katalin Tesch and Ildikó Szabó sparked discussions on depopulation with their Re-habilitation project. Dóra Hegyi, the curator, highlights the evolving importance of Public Art.
