Parma's Pilotta Complex Reopens After Six-Year Renovation
After six years of renovations, the Complesso Monumentale della Pilotta in Parma has fully reopened, transforming the 30,000-square-meter complex into a unified museum. Director Simone Verde oversaw the project, which reconnects the National Gallery, Archaeological Museum, Bodoni Museum, Farnese Theatre, and Palatine Library—institutions that were separated in the 19th century. The Archaeological Museum, founded in 1760 and long closed, now displays artifacts from the Roman city of Veleia, including the Tabula alimentaria of Trajan, the largest inscribed bronze tablet from ancient Rome. The National Gallery features a reorganized layout with seven new rooms in the Alta Nord wing dedicated to 16th- and 17th-century Emilian art, designed by Studio Bordi Rossi Zarotti. The Farnese Theatre, built in 1628, now includes a historically accurate video mapping projection on its proscenium every 30 minutes. The Bodoni Museum, dedicated to typographer Giambattista Bodoni, has moved to the ground floor, and the Palatine Library's Sala Paciaudi has been restored to its original form. Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano attended the ribbon-cutting on November 10, praising the museum as a 'living place' that aligns with ministry initiatives for live music, multimedia, and youth spaces.
