Parma 360 Festival Directors on Third Edition Success and Challenges

The third edition of Parma 360, a contemporary art festival in Parma, Italy, directed by Chiara Canali and Camilla Mineo, is concluding with over 10,000 visitors in its first weekend alone. The festival aims to broaden public engagement with contemporary art by utilizing historically significant and often inaccessible venues, such as the Ospedale Vecchio, a 15th-century former hospital, the church of San Tiburzio, the Ex Scedep factory, and the church of San Quirino. The Antica Farmacia di San Filippo Neri, reopened for the second edition, was unavailable this year due to urgent restorations. The festival features both national and local artists, with about 30 young artists from Parma exhibiting at Ex Scedep and a show on Carlo Mattioli. The first edition faced controversy over Michelangelo Pistoletto's "Il Terzo Paradiso" in Piazzale della Pace, which sparked debates and vandalism but is now seen as a success for generating dialogue. The festival closes on June 1 at Spazio Pasubio with a party, awards, and performances by Giacomo Cossio and street artist Gatto Nero. Canali and Mineo emphasize the importance of free admission, annual recurrence, and gradual public education to foster appreciation for contemporary art, drawing parallels to Fotografia Europea in Reggio Emilia and the Festival della Filosofia in Modena.
