Paris to preserve Marie Curie's Pavillon des Sources as museum

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

The Pavillon des Sources, part of the historic Institut Curie in Paris's Latin Quarter, will be preserved, dismantled, and relocated a few dozen meters away adjacent to an expanded museum. The decision follows public outcry after a planned demolition in January 2024 was suspended. Former French Culture Minister Rima Abdul Malak announced the suspension after discussions with Institut Curie President Thierry Philip. Current Culture Minister Rachida Dati confirmed the preservation plan, which balances heritage protection with the institute's expansion to create Europe's first center for biological chemistry on cancer. The five-story, 2,000-square-meter building was originally part of Marie Curie's laboratory. Historian Claudine Monteil and journalist Stéphane Bern had advocated for the site's classification as a historic monument. No start or completion date for the relocation has been announced.
